2016に140周年を迎えたナパ・ヴァレーの顔…説明不要の名家、『ベリンジャー』、そのフラグシップ・カベルネがこちらの 『プライヴェート・リザーヴ』。

モンダヴィの 『リザーヴ』 やケイマスの 『スペシャル・セレクション』 らと並び、長らくナパを見続けていた、ヴァレーを代表する上位格上げセレクション・カベルネの一つです。

ナパの新興レーベルたちが、人気や需要の度合いで価格の上げ下げが（極端に）行われる中、こうした名門らは周囲の喧騒から離れた据え置き価格が貫かれ、結果として相対的に安くなったような…と感じるのは私だけでしょうか。

内容にしても、王道も突き詰めればそれはオンリー・ワンの個性となります。

今なおこの価格でこれほどまでに高い品質と揺るがぬ安定感を兼ね備えたナパ・カベはなかなかありません。

◎「神から授かったカベルネ・ネクター」byパーカー ’01年にはロバート・パーカーをして「神から授かったカベルネ・ネクター」とまで言わしめたプライヴェート・リザーヴ。

エレガンスとフィネスを兼ね備えたこの万人に愛されるスタイルは、最古参にしながら今だにその輝きを失わず、それはまさにトップ生産者として君臨するベリンジャーの姿そのもの。

貫禄の一本です。

フルーツ・ソースは実はハウエル・マウンテン産が大部分（62％）を占めます。

ダンを筆頭に、ハウエル・マウンテン産の山カベは長期熟成が前提で、リリース当初は飲めないものが多い中、各方面から「今もう旨い」と言わせるプライヴェート・リザーヴ造りは決して簡単ではないはず。

あまりにもさらりと自然にこなし、それを感じさせないのはベリンジャーの底力でしょう。

そのためのサポート役は、セント・ヘレナ産20％、スプリング・マウンテン産7％、マウント・ヴィーダー産7％、カリストガ産4％とヴァレー縦断の他エリアからのフルーツ。

何れも名の知れた畑（シャボット、マーストン、ケネフィック・ランチ等）ばかりであり、他の生産者であればそれぞれシングル・ヴィンヤードをリリースできる一級フルーツを惜しげもなくブレンドしています。

◎Wine Advocate #228（2016.12）より　【RP95点】 「Always the best of all of them is the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve, which in this vintage is a blend of 62% from their Howell Mountain holdings, 22% from St. Helena, 7% from Spring Mountain, 7% from Mt. Veeder and the rest from other sources. Only 7,383 cases were made of this blend of 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot and Petit Verdot. The wine has an inky purple color, a big, sweet kiss of pen ink, graphite, cedar wood, licorice, blackberries and blackcurrants with some background oak, but it’s dominated by the fruit extract and the full-bodied richness and glycerin this wine possesses. The texture is open and lush, and the wine more forward and sexy than the 2013 was at a similar stage of development. 新樽比率82％のカスタム・トーストされたフレンチ・オークで20ヶ月の樽熟成。

’15年はカベルネ・ソーヴィニヨン97％（残りは例年メルロー、マルベック、プティ・ヴェルドなどで構成）。

リッチなコクと大柄なスケールは、ニューカリフォルニア系のナチュラル・メイキングからすれば「ややファット」とする評する向きも理解できますが、ナパ・カベの王道はこちら。

含まれる上質なミネラルや酸を思えば、決して過重過熟ではありません。
